Young adults more negative about their own health
In 2023, 88 percent of young adults aged 18 to 24 rated their health as good or very good. That was 91 percent in 2020. In recent years, they were less likely to rate their own health as very good and were more likely to say that it was ‘fine’. More young people have been suffering from mental health issues since 2021. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this in its National Youth Monitor, which is based on figures from the Health Survey.

In the third quarter of 2023, two-thirds of pupils in secondary education (VO) aged 15 or older had a part-time job. They worked almost 11 hours a week on average, often as shelf stackers, waiters and waitresses or kitchen assistants. Half of them said they mostly or always worked evening shifts. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this based on the Labour Force Survey (LFS) in the Youth Monitor.

Over 6 in 10 working parents in the Caribbean Netherlands with children under age 12 used formal childcare at least once every week in 2022. The children attended a nursery, preschool or out-of-school care. On average, 91 percent of the parents aged 15 to 74 years with children under 12 were in employment. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this based on new figures taken from the Labour Force Survey Caribbean Netherlands.

In 2022, 467 thousand young people in the Netherlands received some form of youth care. This is approximately the same number as in the previous year. It means that 10.5 percent of all young people in the Netherlands under the age of 23 are youth care recipients. The most prevalent form of youth care is youth assistance. Recipients of youth assistance particularly include boys aged 8 to 11 years and girls aged 12 to 17 years. This is evident from new provisional figures, released by Statistics Netherlands (CBS).

In December 2022, net labour participation among young men exceeded the rate among young women. As of 2003, the year in which Statistics Netherlands (CBS) started measuring labour participation, it was higher among women aged 15 to 24 years than among their male peers. Last year, young men outstripped young women. This is evident from new labour force figures released by CBS.

On 1 January 2021, more than a third of all minors in single-parent households were living in a multi-dwelling unit (MDU), for example an apartment, ground floor unit or upstairs unit. This share is three times larger than among children staying with both their parents. Forty percent of the approximately 3.2 million children living at home lived in a terraced house. In very highly urbanised municipalities, 42 percent of local minors lived in an MDU. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this on the basis of a new survey as part of the National Youth Monitor.

In the period 2018-2021, 12 percent of children aged 2 to 11 were overweight and 3 percent severely overweight (obese). Six percent were exposed to secondhand tobacco smoke at home. Overweight, obesity and exposure to tobacco smoke were less prevalent among children with higher educated parents than among those with lower educated parents. This is reported by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) in the Annual Report Youth Monitor 2022, based on new analyses with figures from the latest National Health Survey/Lifestyle Monitor.

In 2021, a lower share of young adults in the Netherlands experienced high personal well-being. For the first time since surveys commenced, they reported high well-being less often than adults aged 25 and over. Young people’s personal well-being declined the most in the areas of institutional trust, social life and health. After secondary education, young people up to the age of 25 are more likely to attend secondary vocational education (MBO) than higher vocational education (HBO) or university (WO). During the 2021/’22 academic year, 40 percent of young people under 25 participating in further education were enrolled in MBO. For HBO and WO, this was 35 and 25 percent, respectively. In 2021, childcare benefits were paid for over 1 million children. The number of children with parents receiving a childcare allowance has been rising since 2015, although growth has levelled off in recent years. Out-of-school care accommodated almost 536 thousand children last year and day care 541 thousand. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this on the basis of new figures.
