More 15 and 16-year-olds in paid work
The number of young people aged 15-26 in paid work increased by 34 thousand in Q4 2023 compared to the same quarter one year earlier. A total of 77.9 percent of young people aged 15-26 were in paid employment. More 15 and 16-year-olds, in particular, have started paid work in recent years. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this based on the Labour Force Survey, as part of the National Youth Monitor.

In 2022, 22 percent of Dutch 12 to 24-year-olds said they had trouble sleeping. Sixteen percent of young people reported being mentally unhealthy in the past four weeks and 12 percent said they were or had been suffering from depression in the past twelve months. Relative to 2017, there is a percentage increase of young people having sleeping problems, mental health issues and depression. This is reported by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) on the basis of new figures of the Annual Report Youth Monitor released today.

The upward trend in youth labour participation which started in 2016 came to an abrupt end last year as the coronavirus crisis set in. In Q2 2020, the youth labour participation rate fell from 65.9 to 60.3 percent, returning to the level of Q1 2016. Labour participation rose again in the third and fourth quarters, to 62.7 percent. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this in the CBS Youth Monitor.
