Fewer welfare children for the first time since 2009

At the end of 2017, nearly 7 percent (228 thousand) of all minor children were living in a family claiming income support, down by nearly 3 thousand on 2016. It was the first drop in the number of children from such families since 2009.

In 2016, 1,492 teenage girls gave birth to a child in the Netherlands. This number was again slightly lower than one year previously. The share of Dutch teenage mothers per one thousand 15 to 19-year-old girls was the lowest of all EU countries.
