More graduates and less alcohol consumption among young people in 2020
With a pandemic ongoing, the year 2020 reshaped the lives of young people in the Netherlands. In secondary education, relatively more students were promoted and almost all final examination students graduated. Fewer young people were at work; fewer girls between the ages of 12 and 18 used alcohol on occasion, and there was less excessive drinking among young men. The number of young people receiving youth care declined; on the other hand, the number of reported child abuse cases went up. Furthermore, compared to the previous year, in 2020 a smaller share of young people reported they were happy and satisfied with life. These are some of the results Statistics Netherlands (CBS) describes in the Annual Report of the National Youth Monitor 2021, published today.

Both on Bonaire and on Saba, boys between the ages of 11 and 18 are on average more likely to report being happy than girls. The main leisure activity of young people on Bonaire is gaming, while Saba’s youth also likes to spend time outdoors with friends. On both islands, over one-quarter say they often feel bored; on Saba, it is mainly the girls who often feel bored. This is indicated by new figures from the ´Scholierenonderzoek Caribisch Nederland´, a survey conducted among students in the Caribbean Netherlands at the end of 2020 as part of the National Youth Monitor.

The majority of 18 to 24-year-olds believe that things are heading in the right direction in the Netherlands. They do not consider social issues such as crime, a multicultural society, population density and mentality in the Netherlands to be a major problem. Environmental pollution, on the other hand, is relatively often seen as a major problem. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this on the basis of the 2019 Annual Report of the National Youth Monitor.

Young people aged 15 to 17 years in the Netherlands say they have little interest in politics. Once they are entitled to vote when they turn 18, they do start to find politics more interesting. At the same time, young people place a great deal of faith in politicians, more so than the older generations.

In 2017, the average age of young people leaving the parental home was 23.5 years, versus 22.8 years in 2012. The shift was strongest among students, who in 2016 started living independently on average one year later than in 2012. Working young people moved out of home 0.7 years later.

Read publication10 percent of 18-24 year-olds who smoke are heavy smokers
Nearly one in three 18-24 year-olds smoke, and one in five of this age group are overweight. At the same time, nearly 91 percent report their own health as good or very good. Young people who smoke and those who are overweight are less positive about their health than those who do not smoke and those who are not overweight.

In 2012, 103 thousand young people (approximately 3 percent) received youth care. Amsterdam has the highest number of children in youth care, but the highest proportion of children in youth care was recorded in the municipality of Kerkrade.
